Do You Pronouce it Pileated or Pileated?

As he reported last week, Paul Demkovich spotted a Pileated Woodpecker looking to create a nest at the back of his yard.  Sure enough, a pair of them have been working together to carve out a hole in a tree.  Here’s a shot with both of them – which one is the male?

The male is the on the left, with the red mustache – here’s a closeup.

Who is actually building the nest?  Well in the six-shot frame below it’s the female scraping up the wood shavings she carved inside the tree and then expelling them away from the nest.  Nice set of pics, Paul!

So how do you pronounce Pileated – Pill-e-ated or Pile-e-ated or Pile-ated?
