GBP Bird Photograph of the Week – 3/15/24

TODAY is the last day to enter GreatBirdPics’ bird photography contest.  Win $100 for the best BIF shot.  CLICK HERE for more details.

Our Bird Photograph of the Week comes to us from Nelson, New Zealand.  Rebecca Bowater took this panoramic shot of a sand spit at low tide with over 1500 birds in the shot.  As you can see some of them are in breeding plumage; they are about to begin their lengthy migration to Alaska and Siberia.  The smallest birds are the Red Knots (with the bright red-orange breast), larger birds are the Bar-tailed Godwits (some also showing a colorful breast) and Ruddy Turnstones line the back of the image.  When I look at this shot I imagine it blown up, hanging in a museum.  Take a look at it on your computer if you have a chance to see the full glory of the shot.
