It’s Paul D-Day!

Website update – I was shocked today when I went to the Latest Pics page and saw that it looked back to normal!  Still some work to be done there, but one step at a time.

Today we celebrate some of Paul Demkovich’s Great Bird Pics from the Galapagos Islands.  It is a wonderful place to visit and not just for the birds.  The history, wildlife, and beauty of the area are unsurpassed.  Paul has shared many pictures from his recent trip with us and I’ve selected some of the iconic birds often associated with the Galapagos to feature.  Enjoy!

Magnificent Frigatebirds spend months at sea but come to the Galapagos to breed.  Here’s a male inflating his gular pouch – it’s bright red to attract a mate.

One of the several endemics (only can be found there) on the Galapagos is the Galapagos Dove.  Its big white eyering is a great field mark.

Another endemic is the Flightless Cormorant.  There haven’t been any predators on Galapagos for so long these birds no longer need wings to escape.  They are agile swimmers and dive into the ocean for their food.

Here’s another iconic bird found there – the Blue-footed Booby.  They have a mesmerizing courtship dance – they slowly lean on their left foot, then to the right foot.

Finally, the Galapagos Hawk is a fierce raptor found on several of the islands.  Here one is feeding on a lizard it just collected.

Thanks Paul for sharing Great Bird Pics from another of your many birding tours.
