As I was driving around looking in farmers fields I noticed this Hawk on the ground.. I slowly crept up onto it in my vehicle and managed to get this shot of it right at sunset.. That’s why you see a buttery golden glow in the background.. I always look for good lighting as well as a good subject..

Excellent shot!
Thank you.
Boy, you got a nice low POV on this one. If shot from a car, he must have been on a slight hill. IMO, if you had not had this nice POV, the bird would have been lost in the BG, which is a problem I have frequently in photographing hawks on the ground. An image to be proud of.
Yes, it was from my Jeep window. And yes it was on a slight hill. That was the only way I could get low enough and not scare the bird away. Thanks for all your wonderful comments. I am appreciating your photos as well.
Great shot of the Rough-legged. I still struggle to ID hawks (except the Red-tailed). I like the golden background.
Thank you Mike. I use Merlin from Cornell University to help me identify birds. Also thanks for featuring me today and in the past.
Nice stealth approach to get close. Great head turn and soft light.
Thanks Emil..
