Before we saw our first Lava Gull, our guide indicated they would be hard to find one. To our amazement a few days later this Lava Gull landed on the raft on the back of our boat and stayed there for well over an hour as we proceeded to our next destination.
The Lava Gull is related to the Laughing Gull and Franklin’s Gull and is the rarest gull in the world. It has the smallest population of any gull in the world, estimated at less than 800 birds.
