Several years ago, I was looking for birds to photograph in May at Daniel Wright FP in Lake County, IL and walking along a trail. I hadn’t had a lot of luck when I turned around and saw a barred owl literally 10-20 feet away from me. I don’t know how long he had been sitting in that dead tree before I noticed him. I was so startled that it took me a bit of time to quietly get my camera up to take photos. I must have been there for 5 minutes taking shot after shot. I barely breathed the whole time. It was amazing. The bird didn’t look stressed. It just sat on its tree branch, looking around.
The bird finally flew off to the top of a nearby tree. Luckily, he/she indulged me for another 15-20 minutes while I took additional photos.
It was so incredible to be that close to such a magnificent bird. It is definitely one of my birding highlights.
