What makes a “great” bird photo?

I think that the definition of what constitutes a great photo differs with each person. For me, the bird is the subject. That is what I want to emphasize certainly but the perch and the background are almost as important to me. Certainly other factors like action come into play too.
When I look at one of my pictures I want my eye to immediately go to the bird. By making the bird brighter and more colorful than background I think my eye is automatically drawn to the bird. Does anyone agree? Or not?
This bird was seen in Costa Rica. It is nesting in this hole about 30′ above ground and was cleaning out debris and waste from the chicks. Unfortunately, not long after this picture was taken a pair of Collared Aracaris came and stole the chick out of the nest and flew off with it. This nest robbing behavior is common with many of the Toucan family of birds.

Better, worse or no difference?

These are scary looking birds!
