This is a Black-collared Hawk, a fish eating hawk from Costa Rica. This bird is very difficult to approach from land-it is skittish. However, it tolerates very well approach from the water. These pictures were taken from a boat in one of the largest wetland areas in the Western Hemisphere, Cano Negro and Queso Medio. The guides in these areas are masters at approaching birds like this slowly and then shutting off the outboard engine and gliding into place. They then hold the boat steady in the rapid current with a pole that they insert down into the muddy bottom. As a photographer you only have seconds to shoot before the boat gets swept away in the current. On this day the wind was blowing hard which complicated matters. You can see the windblown effect this has had.
