Dark-eyed Junco
This is an example of a bird that is common in many parts of the country, a Dark-eyed Junco. Often this bird is difficult for me to photograph, as it spends a lot of its time on the ground in the grasses. This perch was placed near an area where these birds would come and eat grass seeds daily and I waited for you to jump up on the perch. I felt it was more photogenic in that spot. At the same time I photographed a number of, what otherwise are ground feeding birds, that would periodically land on the perch.

Did you put any food atop the perch or did they just jump up there randomly?
They would use the perch randomly. I put it down about 3 days prior to using it as a photo prop. There was a small patch of grass that had gone to seed and that is what attracted them. They used the perch as a staging area before jumping down to the ground. I had to be quick-they only sat on the perch for seconds before going down.
