The Lamellae in the colored rendition of this photo gets lost. The bright yellow on the upper and lower mandible does not set off the Lamellae like the black and white photo. The visible orange leg and foot are also a distraction due to the bright colors.
The bright sun shining on the Lamellae highlights their shape and texture and they are more defined.
The black and white emphasizes the many different feather patterns and textures on the entire Mallard that get lost by the many shades of color on the Mallard overall.
This Mallard appears to be enjoying the sun and looks relaxed with its foot next to its mandible.
The water droplets off the beak and behind the leg appear suspended and more apparent in this photo.
