Trumpeter Swan

A Scrimmage Between Swans (Birds in B&W)

We watched for about 10 minutes as the Trumpeter Swan chased the Mute Swan around a section of Windows on the Waterfront. One of my photos shows the Trumpeter Swan almost on top of the Mute Swan. Each of these birds had a mate a distance away.

Although the swans are basically all white, I chose this photo because transforming the basic green background to black and white tones highlights where the sun was reflecting off the lily pads and emphasizes the intensity of this encounter. This photo shows the terror on the Mute Swan’s face as the determined Trumpeter Swan is quickly approaching. The Trumpeter took off so fast in pursuit, it still has a blade of grass in its beak.

The lily pads appear more defined in black and white and the large amount of green in the background is not a distraction to the intensity of this encounter.

The trail of water created by the Trumpeter Swan is amplified in this photo.
