We spent two weeks in September in the Amazon Basin generally in the area around Manaus Brazil. Sheila and the rest of our group bird watched with binoculars. Only a couple participants (including me) photographed as much as possible. There were Antbirds, Antwrens, Tyrants, Nunbirds, Puffbirds, Woodcreepers and many more. Often, they were seen as tiny dark birds flitting through the shadowy forest among the thick foliage understory – or nearly out of sight in the tree tops. The bird watching was fabulous with more than 350 species seen, while the photography was tough with many photos unusable. But sometimes, I was properly prepared (or just plain lucky).
We took a motorized canoe and then hiked for 30 minutes through the forest to find this Amazonian Black Tyrant in the Do Jau National Park – which is only accessible by boat.
