Yesterday the winner of our “In and Around Water” Conest was announced. Thanks again to all the photographers who submitted their GreatBirdPics for the contest – I very much enjoyed viewing each and every one of them. We narrowed down the entries to eleven shots, and after selecting the winner, the remaining ten were awarded Honorable Mentions – I will be recognizing their excellence today and tomorrow. So in no particular order here are five of the Honorable Mention photographs:
Docshaf submitted this wonderful shot of a Piping Plover piping. A cute bird caught just at the right moment. I love the interesting shells on the ground around the bird.
Here’s another shot submitted by our winner Mike Affinito of Black-necked Stilts mating. I appreciate the ground-level view and his timing was perfect. Great focus, too. You can see the differences between the male and female. You’ll notice that Mike not only had the winning photograph, three of his pictures received Honorable Mentions – quite an accomplishment considering there were 176 total entries.
Ronald Zigler’s shot of a Great Blue Heron walking in front of the wall of a reservoir with with a fish in its beak and a spray of water in the foreground is a great image to look at and enjoy.
We saw a variation of this shot previously (no, it wasn’t submitted before the contest started). Bajadreamer submitted this one of an Anna’s Hummingbird getting a drink of water from a water fountain in a friend’s backyard. I like this shot better than the previous one as you get a better view of the hummer’s wings. You can even see its little tongue sticking out!
Paul Demkovich submitted several entries for the contest and Xwinger and I liked this one a lot. It’s a Snowy Egret just taking off from the water. Again, good timing and look at all the water droplets surrounding the body!
Five more Honorable Mention photographs will be featured in tomorrow’s email, and they’re just as good as the ones above.
