Great Blue Heron

The Proper Way to Catch Fish (Water Contest)

We were standing on a lookout on the top of a very old pumphouse that overlooks Window on the Waterfront. This Great Blue Heron flew in slightly to our right. It very slowly stalked its way to just left of where we were standing about 20 feet away but higher than it. We were treated to an awesome experience as it was successful in catching a Bluegill.

We were surprised to see it had speared the fish. This is the closest we have been to observe a Great Blue Heron catch a fish. I do not know if this is how they always catch them or if they grab a fish with the bill.

We watched the entire process from it stalking its prey to the swallowing of it.
