Three of us were on the way back to our cars when this young Red-tailed Hawk landed on an electric pole almost directly above our heads. The young have pale yellow eyes, while adults have dark brown eyes. This youngster preened various feathers on different sections of its body as the cameras below were busy capturing this exciting close encounter and remained there as we continued on our way.
Changing this photo from color to black and white emphasizes the shape of the hawk as the wings and back of the bird are dark. The interspersed feathers are also more evident.
The tip of feather extending beyond its mouth shows more definition and following the feather to the base the downy feathers also are unmistakable.
The pole the hawk is perched on was shades of gray and now the photo is more stunning in shades of black and white.
